Affordable: Electric Car

When the 2013 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive arrives in showrooms next spring it will be the most affordable electric vehicle available in the U.S.
Smart USA has just announced that the ForTwo Electric Drive will start at $25,000 before any of the available federal and state tax credits are applied. After the $7,500 federal tax credit the price of the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive drops down to $17,500.

“A signature characteristic of the Smart brand is its commitment not only to being green but to making people think differently about it,” said Tracey Matura, general manager of smart. “Green can be fun. Green can be affordable. And a lot of us don’t really need a four-seater, or at least not for every trip. Smart is about rightsizing for your transportation needs and also for your wallet.”

Based on the Smart ForTwo, the 2013 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is powered by a 73 horsepower electric motor with a driving range around 87 miles. Smart also states that it will take up to 7 hours to fully recharge the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive using a 240-volt charging station. Smart will also offer a cabriolet version of the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive that will start at $28,000.
